This white hamlet, set in the midst of fertile countryside, has been populated since Ancient Times, thanks to its strategic position as a natural crossroads. Bearing witness to this early presence are the Dolmen de Alberite and the Torrevieja archaeological site, which belong to the collections at the Municipal History Museum. The heritage of the hamlet includes monuments such as the Matrera Castle, the Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes Church, the Church and Convent of San Francisco, the Nuestra Señora de las Montañas Hermitage and manor houses such as the Palacio de los Ríos or the Palacio de los Topete. Villamartín uses its beautiful streets and squares to celebrate its annual popular San Mateo Cattle Fair, which has been declared a Festivity of National Tourist Interest. The fair is also a good opportunity to taste the delicious chickpea stews, asparagus soups or traditional homemade pastries.
